Swedish-English dictionary

A small dictionary to help you understand some of the Swedish racing words and terms.

The horse

  • Arabiskt Fullblod – Arabian or Arab horse
  • Åring – Yearling
  • Engelskt Fullblod – Thoroughbred
  • Föl – Foal
  • Hingst – Colt, entire or stallion
  • Häst – Horse (any horse, such as filly, colt, mare, entire)
  • Kön - Sex (Sto = filly/mare, Hingst = colt/entire, Valack = gelding)
  • Sto – Filly or mare
  • Valack – Gelding

The colours of the horse

  • Brun – Bay
  • Fux – Chestnut
  • Mörkbrun – Brown
  • Skimmel – Grey
  • Svart - Black

People in racing

  • Amatörryttare – Amateur Jockey
  • Amatörtränare – Amateur Trainer (similar to Permit Holder)
  • Arbetsryttare – Work rider
  • Ägare – Owner
  • Hästskötare – Groom
  • Jockey – Jockey
  • Tränare – Trainer
  • Träckare – Person leading up at the races (Träcka = Lead up)
  • Uppfödare – Breeder

Racing tack

  • Blinkers - Blinkers
  • Bly – Lead
  • Blyvojlock – Weight cloth
  • Dress – Colours or silks
  • Hjälm – Helmet
  • Hjälmöverdrag – Cap or helmet cover
  • Huva – Blind fold
  • Nummervojlock – Number cloth
  • Säkerhetsväst – Body protector
  • Spö – Stick
  • Stövlar – Boots

Racecard and results

  • Aktuellt Hcp - Current rating
  • Anmälningslista - List of entered horses
  • Bana - Track or Racecourse
  • Banförhållande (sometimes shortened Banförhål.) - Going or track condition
  • Banprogram - Racecard (printed or pdf)
  • Datum - Date
  • Handicap - Handicap or rating
  • Insats - Stake (for the big races)
  • Insatslopp - The big races with several forfeit stages
  • Lopp (same as Löpning) = Race
  • Lopptyp - Type of race (ÅV = Weight for age, MA = Maiden, etc.)
  • Löpning (same as Lopp) - Race
  • Max Hcp - Maximum rating (lifetime)
  • Proposition = race conditions
  • Resultat - Results
  • Segerpris - the winner's prize money
  • Spår - Draw (same as the number on the number cloth)
  • Startlista - List of declared runners, incl. jockeys
  • Tävlingsdag - Raceday
  • Vikt - Weight carried (in kg)
  • Tävlingsresultat - Form or Racing Results
  • Underlag - surface (dt = dirttrack, gr = turf, hä = hurdle, st = steeplechase)
  • Viktlistor - Weight list
  • Vinstsumma - Prize money earned by the horse in the race

  • God (gd) - good
  • God till lätt (gl) - Good to firm
  • Lätt (lt) - Firm
  • Blöt (bl) - Wet
  • Mjuk (mj) - Soft
  • God till mjuk (gm) - Good to soft
  • Något tung (nt) - A bit heavy
  • Tung (tg) - Heavy

At the racecourse

  • Bana – Track or Racecourse
  • Dirttrackbana – Dirt track
  • Gräsbana – Turf track
  • Ledvolt – Parade ring
  • Startboxar – Starting stalls or gates
  • Målstolpe – Winning post
  • Vinnarcirkel – Winner’s enclosure

Breeding

  • Betäckning – Covering
  • Betäckningssäsong – Covering season
  • Brunstig – In season
  • Efter – by
  • Hingsthållare – Stallion farm
  • Far – Father
  • Mor – Mother
